Wood Care & Patina Library

A living guide to maintaining your Finnish wood kitchen tools. Learn how proper care helps your tools develop character and beauty over decades of use.

The Beauty of Time

Unlike disposable kitchen tools, Finnish wood develops a rich patina over time. This gallery shows how wood ages beautifully when cared for properly versus being left untreated.

Year 1: Fresh Finish

When first finished with linseed oil, Finnish birch shows its natural light tones and subtle grain patterns. The surface is smooth and ready for years of use.

Year 5: Developing Character

After regular use and proper oiling, the wood begins to show its character. The grain becomes more pronounced, and the surface develops a warm, honey-colored patina.

Year 10: Rich Patina

A decade of proper care results in a deep, rich patina that tells the story of countless meals. The wood feels smoother, looks more beautiful, and functions perfectly.

Daily Care

After Each Use: Wash your wooden tools with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Avoid soaking them in water, as this can cause the wood to swell and potentially crack.

Drying: Always dry your tools immediately after washing. Use a clean towel to remove excess water, then allow them to air dry completely before storing. Never put wooden tools in the dishwasher.

Storage: Store your tools in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid storing them in closed containers where moisture can accumulate. A utensil holder or open rack works perfectly.

Regular Oil Treatment

Frequency: Apply food-grade linseed oil or mineral oil every 4-6 weeks, or whenever the wood begins to look dry or feel rough to the touch.

Application: Apply a small amount of oil to a clean cloth and rub it into the wood, following the grain direction. Allow the oil to penetrate for 15-20 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.

Benefits: Regular oiling protects the wood from moisture, prevents cracking, and enhances the natural grain patterns. It also helps develop that beautiful patina over time.

What to Avoid: Never use cooking oils like olive or vegetable oil, as these can become rancid. Stick to food-grade linseed oil or mineral oil specifically designed for wood care.

Maintenance Tips

Removing Stains

For light stains, gently rub the area with fine sandpaper or a lemon half dipped in salt. For deeper stains, you may need to sand the surface lightly and reapply oil.

Preventing Cracks

Avoid extreme temperature changes and never leave wooden tools near heat sources. Regular oiling maintains the wood's moisture balance and prevents cracking.

Restoring Dry Wood

If your tools feel dry or rough, apply extra oil treatments weekly until they feel smooth again. The wood will absorb what it needs and develop a protective layer.

Cared For vs. Untreated

With Regular Oil Treatment

Wood that receives regular oil treatments maintains its structural integrity, develops a beautiful patina, and becomes smoother over time. The oil creates a protective barrier that prevents moisture damage and enhances the natural grain patterns.

After 10 years of proper care, your tools will look more beautiful than when they were new, with rich colors and a silky-smooth surface that feels perfect in your hands.

Left Untreated

Wood that isn't regularly oiled can become dry, brittle, and prone to cracking. The surface may feel rough, and the wood can absorb stains and odors more easily. Without protection, the tools may warp or split over time.

However, even neglected tools can often be restored with proper sanding and regular oil treatments, though they may never achieve the same beauty as tools that were cared for from the beginning.
